障壁 / Barrier べらぼう・サウンドトラック Vol.1 楽曲解説
吉原は、男性にとってはいわゆる「歓楽街」でしたが、そこで働く女性たちにとっては牢獄といってもいいような場所でした。堀や壁、さらには先が尖った竹の柵に囲まれ、女性たちが吉原へと辿る道は、ひとたび入ってしまうと戻るすべのない、一方通行の道のりでした。５年から10年の年季奉公という形で働かされ、パトロンに身請けしてもらえれば束縛から解放されるという望みはありましたが、多くは「廓病」などのために命を落とし、自由を得ることなく人生を終えました。自力で自由を勝ち取った女性もいましたが、そのような例は稀でした。
「障壁 (Barrier) 」と題したこの曲は、吉原に捕らわれた女性たちの暗澹たる境遇を表現しています。音楽は途切れがちに進み、同じフレーズがため息をつくように繰り返され、やるせない思いを乗せて続きます。さらに日本コロンビアのアーティスト、LEO氏による箏の即興演奏が不安を煽るように響きます。他の曲では夜の賑わいと遊楽の楽しさを表現していますが、この曲では女性や少女たちの絶望を描き、彼女たちの過酷な現実を浮き彫りにしています。
Yoshiwara may have been designated a “pleasure district” for men, but for the women who worked as courtesans, it was more like a prison. Surrounded by a moat, walls and even spiked bamboo barriers, the journey to Yoshiwara for most of the women working there was one way only. With indentured terms of five to ten years, and the hope to be bought out of their bondage by a patron, many women eventually escaped that life, but many also died of “brothel diseases” or other causes before they could gain their freedom. Infrequently, some courtesans were able to gather enough wealth to purchase their own freedom, but these seem to have been rare exceptions.
The music for Barrier reflects these bleak prospects for the women caught in Yoshiwara. It stops and starts, repeating some phrases in a halting, discouraged pace; and includes frightening koto embellishments improvised by LEO, our Columbia Artist koto player. Unlike the music from other parts of the score that reflects the nightlife and pleasure-seekers’ enjoyment, this piece shows, by contrast, the hopelessness that many women and girls faced.
