斎藤道三と過ごした最後の瞬間まで、光秀は、統一され平穏な国という概念に感銘に受けていました。夢を実現したい願望が希望的観測と繋がり、願った理想とは異なる考えを持つ人物を信頼したのは、光秀の過ちかもしれません。しかしながら、道三の助言である「大きな国」を作るという考えは、物語を通じて光秀の中に灯ります。

（大きな国を作るという）目標は純粋のように思えますが、この曲「大きな国」は希望や鼓舞を単に反映していません。曲の始まり、思慕の念を感じさせる弦とハープは、平穏で一つになった未来を表現しつつも、それが明確に見えないこと、力強くもまだ遠い先であることが表現されています。

1’53箇所から、動的で劇的な演出があります。金管は、痛みを感じるような弦と共に、雄大な未来を表現しています。それは純粋な幸福ではありません。金管の濁った響きは、（日本統一と天下泰平の）目標が成し遂げられても、その道には多大な痛みと障壁が憚ることが表現されています。人を動かす強大な理想ではありますが、戦や虐殺が必然的に伴う道であり、（実際に起こったように）成し遂げられれば（紀元前650年頃古代ギリシアアテナイに於ける初の立法者である）ドラコンの憲法のように長い間の平安が保たれます。

2’49箇所から、統一が多くの戦と領地化が伴う極めて大きな試練であること、そしてその理念が力強く肯定的なものであることが表現されています。犠牲や闘争が伴ったとしても、天下統一と天下泰平という概念、そして麒麟がくる希望は、魅惑的で魔法のような概念であることが表現されています。

From his time with Dosan to the very end, Mitsuhide is inspired by the notion of a united, peaceful Japan. Arguably, he makes mistakes – his desire to realise his dream leads him to wishful thinking; he places total trust people who do not fully share his ideas or intentions. Nevertheless, Dosan’s admonition to Mitsuhide to make a “Big Country” is one that fires him throughout the story.

Even though the goal may be pure, the music for “Big Country” does not depict simply hope and inspiration. It starts off with yearning in the strings and harp, as though the vision of a peaceful, unified future is there, but possibly it’s still hard to picture in detail – it remains a far-off vision, if a powerful one.

About 1’53, we reach a climactic moment. The brass depicts the grandeur of the future, with the strings soaring above. It is not all pure happiness, however. The dissonance in the brass is intended to represent that there will be great suffering and many obstacles along the way, even if the goal can be reached. It is a mighty, powerful vision, but one that will inevitably run through the path of war, slaughter, and (as it happened) somewhat draconian laws to keep the “peace” in check, once it was achieved.

But while acknowledging the brutal struggle needed to unify a country beset by many wars and fiefdoms, the vision nevertheless is a powerful, positive one, as expressed beginning about 2’49. Despite all the sacrifices and strife along the way, the notion of unification and peace, the hope of Kirin coming, remains magic.
