「東洲斎写楽」という名で突如現れ、そして突然姿を消したこの謎多き絵師の正体は今もなお解き明かされていません。独特の仕上げ、奇抜なポーズ、斬新な構図──それまでにない表現を持つ写楽の作品群は、江戸の美術界に衝撃を与えました。この曲もまた、劇中のどの楽曲とも似ていない異色の一曲です。あいまいでふわりとした和音の連なりから始まり、一転して音楽はものすごいスピードで展開していきます。 7拍子と4拍子を交互に数えるという独特のリズムを正確に追わなければならないため、演奏は非常に難易度が高く、さらに、音階自体も通常とは異なり、独特です。この曲では、写楽の作品が登場した当時に沸き起こった熱狂と衝撃を、そのまま音楽で表現してみました。

The mysterious appearance – and even more mysterious disappearance – of the famed artist who painted under the name, “Sharaku” remains an unsolved enigma. The explosion into the art world of these images, with their novel finishes, unusual poses and framing, created a sensation in Edo. Musically, this piece is not like any other in the score. After a series of ambiguous, “floaty” chords, the music charges ahead, unreeling at a break-neck speed. It’s a big challenge for the musicians, because they have to count in an unusual way, alternating between counting in 7 and then 4. On top of that, the music is set to an unusual scale. The intention is to suggest with music the boiling excitement that Sharaku’s works generated.
