この物語に登場する人々の中には、 平賀源内や田沼意次のように運命の流れに捕らわれてしまった者たちがいます。彼らは自身のためではなくより大きな理想を掲げて尽力しましたが、その先には容赦のない抵抗と越えがたい壁が立ちはだかっていました。この曲は、不可思議な、というよりむしろ超自然的な悪魔のような存在を感じさせる旋律が前進し、見えざる敵や逃れることのできない状況の圧力を描いています。鋭く痛ましい旋律の「問い」と「答え」が弦のスル・ポンティチェロで繰り返され、その合間をチェロとヴィオラが急降下するようなフレーズで断ち切っていきます。最後には、暗い運命の行進がすべてを覆い尽くし、逃れることのできない破滅の足音が静かに近づいてくるのです。

Some of the figures in our story – Gennai Hiraga and Okitsugu Tanuma, for example – seem caught in the grip of fate. Although they both strove for goals that were greater than just themselves, they both encountered implacable resistance. The music illustrates the menace of unseen foes, of impossible circumstances, followed by a strange march, almost supernatural, even devilish. An edgy, painful melody “call” and its “answer” (played with a harsh sul ponticello on the strings) recur, interrupted by a diving, downward gesture from the cellos and violas. Accompanied by the trampling march of a dark fate, of an inescapable doom takes over.
