「自由」というものは、時代や人によって、その意味が少しずつ違います。 養子として育ち、厳しい取り締まりや検閲が行われた時代に生きた重三郎にとって、様々な制約のない自由な生活や経済的な自由、そして思うがままに出版できる自由は、きっと心から憧れるものだったに違いありません。

この曲は、そんな「自由」への前向きで力強い憧れを表現したものです。下野竜也マエストロの指揮のもと、このNHK交響楽団の素晴らしい演奏は、東京のNHKスタジオで収録されました。

1分20秒あたりでメインテーマが登場します。そしてメロディは、ひょっとしたら辿り着けないのではと思えるほど遥か彼方にある頂きを目指し、高みへと昇り続けます。

Each era, and even each individual, will define “freedom” in a particular way. For Jyuzaburo, who started life as an adopted orphan in a time of heavy police presence and censorship, and whose life was constrained in so many ways, the idea of personal freedom, of financial freedom, and of the freedom to publish exactly what he wished must have been tremendously appealing. This piece is intended to express a positive, affirmative yearning for that freedom, played by the wonderful NHK orchestra under the baton of Maestro Shimono and recorded at NHK studios in Tokyo. The main theme enters at approximately 1:20 with the melody continually reaching ever higher for a distant, maybe unattainable peak.
