吉原に生きる人々の暮らしは少し独特で、ときに非常に過酷でした。男女の比率は極端に偏っていましたし、吉原内では恋愛が固く禁じられていたため、いわゆる父親・母親・子供といった伝統的な家族構成の家庭はほとんどありませんでした。さらに、女性や少女たちの多くが故郷から無理やり連れて来られ、望まぬまま、年季奉公を長年強いられていました。そんな彼女たちにとって「家」というものは、あまりにも遠い存在だったことでしょう。

けれど、人はどんな場所にあっても、慣れ親しんだものに「家」のようなぬくもりを感じることがあります。そんな複雑な想いを音にできたらと思い、民謡のような、子守唄のようなメロディーを書きました。優しく、懐かしく、そしてほんの少し切ない曲になっています。

The residents of Yoshiwara led somewhat strange, sometimes very difficult lives. With a disproportionate number of men to women, and strict rules forbidding relationships, the traditional mother-father-children family was not available to many residents. Moreover, many of the women and girls who lived there had been wrenched from their homes to be brought as indentured servants, with lengthy terms imposed on them against their will. As a result, the old-fashioned idea of “home” was not available to most residents.

Nevertheless, the familiar, even if it is unusual, can take on the sense of home. To try capturing some of those mixed feelings, the melody I wrote feels a little like a folk song, a little like a lullaby. It is gentle and a bit nostalgic, and a little sad.
