物語の前半、光秀は、あまり豊かでない内陸国の美濃の統治者（斎藤道三）に仕えていました。当時の光秀は、大名達にも注目されず、堺や京から離れた場所で生活しておりました。一言で表現すれば、まだ無名で人脈がない頃です。

しかしながら、光秀は極めて思慮深く、強い責任感と義を重んじる心を持ち、耐えがたい程に正直者として描かれています。（第13回にて）感情の起伏が激しく恐ろしいリーダーの道三が光秀に「正直に申せ。わしを嫌いか?」と問い詰める場面で、光秀は詰まりつつも「正直、どちらかと申せば、嫌いでございます」と答え、恩義が故に従う意思があることを正直伝えます。

光秀が高い正義感と情熱を持つことを様々な場面でも見ることができます（物語の冒頭では）野盗達が民をう状況に激しく憤りを感じ、自身の命をかけて守ります。

光秀は、道三の — 妻との信頼に満ちた関係がありつつも — 二面性を好んでいませんでしたが、民へ尽くす姿勢に敬意を感じておりました。後には幕府、朝倉義景、織田信長との相反する義に大きな苦悩を抱えるようになります。。

「揺るぎのないもの」音楽的な構想は、このようなことが反映されております。曲は静かに思慮深く広がるように始まり、光秀の思慮深さ、熟考する様相、何事にも真剣に取り組む光秀像を表現していいます。ダルシマー、ハープ、ツィンバロムと共に、多義的なコードを使用することで、長調でも短調でもない響き、快活的でも絶望的でもない響きで表現されています。真剣でありながらも、光秀の極めて深く内観的な側面が表現されています。

1’15箇所からは、光秀のテーマがソロトランペットによって演奏されています。孤独感と不安定な響きを少し含みつつも、強さと静に輝く様子がトランペットにより表現されています。音楽的には、メインテーマと同じくドリア旋法が使われており、エオリア旋法よりもメジャーコードを多用しています。光秀の常に真剣な人物像、そして光と影の部分を持ち合わせていた事が表現されています。

トランペットによる光秀のテーマを演奏と共に、2’20箇所から、弦は高く、高く昇り、金管も加わり、第三の箇所へとクレッェンドしていきます。（この箇所では）光秀の無謀とも思える成し遂げたい夢、日本に平和をもたらす夢が表現されています。光秀の夢のように壮大に、弦とトランペットの最も高い音程の旋律と共に表現されています。

曲の終わりの3’15箇所からは、フレンチホルンのコードによって、光秀の内なる力が表現されています。高音のバイオリンの叫びと共に、トランペットとトロンボーンのファンファーレによって、光秀が何かを成し遂げる人物であることが表現されています。最後は、光秀の旋律モチーフがトランペットにより演奏されますが、今回は明瞭且つ力強く、冒頭のような不安定さはありません。歴史に変化をもたらす光秀像です。

At the outset of the story, Mitsuhide is essentially a vassal to a warlord in a landlocked, relatively poor province of Mino. He is not known by powerful daimyos and lives far from Sakai or Kyo. In short, he’s an unknown man with no connections.

However, he is an intensely thoughtful person, with a sense of responsibility and duty, and he is agonizingly honest. When Dosan, an explosive and potentially dangerous leader, asks Mitsuhide, “do you like me?” Mitsuhide honestly replies to the effect of, “no, but I respect and will follow you.”

Moreover, Mitsuhide has a keen sense of justice, a passion that we see in many areas. He resents intensely the impact that bandits have on ordinary people, and risks his life to defend against them.

He doesn’t like Dosan’s dishonesty, is faithful to his wife, and honours his commitments to others, undergoing an intense internal struggle when confronted with conflicting loyalties to the Bafuku, Asakura Yoshikage, and Nobunaga.

The musical idea for Iron-Willed Mitsuhide embodies some of these ideas. We first hear, quietly, a thoughtful, almost brooding section: the thoughtful, contemplative and serious Mitsuhide. Dulcimers, harp, and cimbalom begin, with the chords ambiguous; they are neither major nor minor, neither cheerful or tragic. They are serious, however, reflecting Mitsuhide’s intense, introspective side.

At 1’15 we hear Mitsuhide’s theme played on a solo trumpet. It is a somewhat lonely, even tentative sound, but the trumpet nevertheless has strength and a quiet glow, much like the character. We are, as with the main title, in the musical dorian mode, with more major chords implied than its more typical cousin, the aeolian scale. Mitsuhide is serious, but there is light as well as dark to him.

As the trumpet plays Mitsuhide’s theme, the strings rise higher and higher, more brass enters, until at 2’20 we have a crescendo into the third section – we can “hear” Mitsuhide’s tumultuous wish to accomplish something enormous: bringing peace to Japan. The scale of this section is as large as his ambition, with the strings and the trumpet straining at the very top of their range.

Finally, at 3’15, we have the choir of French Horns announce the power inside Mitsuhide. With the violins screaming above and the trumpets and trombones playing fanfares, we have a sort of brass announcement; this is a man who is going to matter. We end with a final reiteration of Mitsuhide’s motif on trumpet – very forthright and powerful; nothing tentative here. This is the Mitsuhide who will make a difference to history.
