改革や革新を志す者には、現状維持を望む者たちからの抵抗が付き物です。本作における重要人物のひとり、田沼意次もまた、あらゆる勢力の狭間でどうにか立ち回ろうともがいていました。中には、陰に潜む暗黒に包まれた勢力もありました。この曲は、当時の政界に蠢いていた強力かつ不穏な力を描いています。冒頭では、チェロとコントラバスによるオクターブの不気味な旋律が流れ出します。そこは陽の当たる世界ではなく、変化に強く抗い、わずかな革新の兆しすら押し潰そうとする強大な力が支配する場所。曲が進むにつれ、色々なメロディが複雑に絡み合い始めます。それは、当時の迷宮のような政界で入り組んだ思惑がぶつかり合う様子を描いています。そしてこの曲には、どこか諦めたような空気も漂います――皮肉にも、いかに高い地位にある役人であっても、彼らは必ず対立や権力争い、時には裏切りにさえ直面せざるを得なかったのです。
Every would-be reformer or innovator faces resistance from those who are prospering and don’t want anything to change. Okitsugu Tanuma, a major character in the story, attempted to balance multiple forces, some of them cloaked and dark. This piece illustrates the rough, lurking forces of power that could impact anyone in government at this time. We begin with a menacing string line played in octaves on cellos and basses; this is not a sunny world, but one of powerful forces resistant to change and keen to stamp out any suggestion of an innovation. As it develops, the piece weaves together different melodic lines, intended to represent the snarl of different agendas common in the labyrinthine politics of that time. This piece has a fatalistic feeling; ironically, despite their official power, government officials of this era, even senior ones, inevitably faced opposition, rivalries, and, sometimes, treachery.
