揺るがぬ意志 / Unbreakable Will
現代では、テクノロジーや産業、芸術などジャンルを問わず、「無一文から一攫千金」のようなストーリーは、探し回らずともそのあたりに転がっています。しかし18世紀当時は、生まれ持った境遇を越えて活躍できる人はほとんどいませんでした。というのも、その人自身の力以上に、周囲の人々の期待や、時に為政者による規制が個人の行動を厳しく制限していたからです。今日でも成功をつかむのは容易くはありませんが、あの時代ではそれがいっそう困難だったことは想像に難くありません。たとえば、重三郎は物語の初めに「吉原の外では板元として出版することは許されない」という地本問屋の『定』があると言いくるめられてしまいます。現代の私たちからすれば理解しがたいことですが、当時、こうした公式・非公式的な取り決めは日本のみならず世界各地で数多く存在していました。そんな規制や暗黙の掟は、ガードレールのように人の進路を塞ぎ、人は、人生とは生まれ持った境遇からは踏み外さずに生きるもの、と思い込んでいたのです。そのような時代背景を踏まえると、重三郎が社会的・商業的なさまざまな障壁を乗り越え、成功への道を切り拓いていったことの素晴らしさがいっそう際立ちます。
金なし、家なし、他に頼れるものもなし… この世界で自分がどれほど孤独な存在か、そんな現実を痛感する蔦重の心を映すように、この曲は哀しみを湛えた調べで始まります。ですが、彼には人とは違う何かがあった——まだ誰にも知られていない野心の炎が、心の奥底で確かに燃えていました。その情熱を象徴するようにソロ・トランペットがゆったりとしたテンポで立ち上がり、深く何かを見つめるようにメインテーマの変奏を奏でます。トランペットは冒頭ほとんど独奏で、あたりには情感あふれる余韻が漂うのみですが、その音にはどこか広がりと、静かで揺るぎない力が宿っています。
2分15秒で音楽は一瞬止まり、ヴァイオリンがダルシマーの伴奏を伴いながら旋律を引き継ぎます。音は次第に勢いを増し、やがて強い決意を感じさせる嵐のような展開へ。そして再びトランペットが登場すると、今度は全オーケストラが重三郎を背後から包みこみ、世界を変えようとする彼の不屈の意志を、豊かに力強く奏で上げていきます。
In modern times, we don’t have to search too far to uncover stories of “rags to riches,” whether in technology, industry, or the arts. In the 18th century, however, few people rose above their station in part because the expectations of all those around them (and in some areas, because of the authorities). If it is hard today to rise in the world, it was far harder then. For example, Jyuzaburo initially is tricked into believing that there is a publisher’s guild that doesn’t allow him to publish outside Yoshiwara. While we might be surprised that he could be fooled in this way, such rules – formal and informal – abounded at that time, not only in Japan but in many other places as well. These guardrails often reinforced stasis, leading most people to hew to the path and social stratum into which they were born.
With that in mind, it is all the more amazing that Jyuzaburo overcame such pressures and the barriers, both social and commercial, to his success; this piece illustrates part of his rise. The music begins with a melancholy tone as Jyuzaburo feels the force of how alone he is in the world, with no money, family name, or other resources. But there was something special about him, and the solo trumpet emerges with a contemplative variation on the main theme, at a slow pace, representing the still-secret, but intense flame of his ambition. The trumpet is largely alone at first, with just the backdrop of feelings, but it has an expansiveness and quiet power.
At 2’15, there is a pause, and the violins take up the thread, backed by dulcimer, gradually building to a storm of determination. The trumpet returns, now with the entire orchestra behind him, expressing an unbreakable determination to change his world.
