「障壁 (Barrier) 」の重苦しさとは打って変わって、「夢幻街 (Vanity)」は吉原の夜の輝きと魅力を顧客の視点から描いています。最高位の花魁たちが纏う絢爛豪華な着物や夜通し響く唄の調べ、灯りや料理、芸者に歌人に軽業師などなど、足繁く通う常連客らを虜にする魅惑の世界です。彼らはここでひとときの安らぎと儚い快楽を買い求め、めくるめく吉原に浸り、それを味わい尽くすのです。

By contrast with the sombre “Barrier” piece, “Vanity” reflects the glitter and allure of Yoshiwara’s nightlife, as seen by the customers. This piece is about the dazzling fashions of the highest-echelon courtesans’ fashions, the all-night music, lights, food, entertainers, poets, acrobats and other attractions enjoyed by patrons who frequented Yoshiwara. It is about the patrons’ perceptions and indulgence, of the escapist, ephemeral pleasures that could be purchased here.
