戦国時代のような戦が絶え間ない時、多くの人々は愛する人を失い悲痛を体験しました— 息子、父、娘、妻。極めて多くの死で、物語を読んだり視聴して想像し難い程の数です。如何に衝撃的か、実感できないほどの数です。

一方で、それぞれの遺族の喪失感は、射抜かれるように辛辣な鮮明な体験です。悲しみと共に残された人々は、故人が使用した洋服、道具、玩具、思い入れのある椅子や器などを見る度に、生存していたころの様子を思い出し、思い出や感情に、再び記憶の火が灯されます。

当初、この曲「When It’s Gone」は「Kindling（灯）」と呼んでおりました。残された部屋や風景は、故人との思い出、イメージ、感情を火を灯すように呼び起こし、時に、予想せぬほどの力と鮮明さを伴う事が表現された曲だからです。

歌詞の冒頭では、故人が残した物や場所が語られています。— 写真、洋服、部屋の様子。同時に、この曲で表現されているのは、人が感じ続ける、決して消えない故人への感情のエコー（残響）です。愛した人を失う事は、一度で完結する出来事ではありません。残響のように、永久的に、時に形を変えながら、感情は決して消えることはありません。私たちは、写真やささいな物を見つけた時に — 故人のしおりやベルトなど — 記憶が一瞬で甦ります。ふとしたきっかけで、ある瞬間の記憶が呼び起こされることもあります — 彼女が言った些細な事、笑い声、共にした旅の事。 去ってしまった人と永劫の時を過ごしたかのよう、私たちは記憶や感情を思い出すのです。

この楽曲は、光秀が仏教を信仰し、教えていた時期もあったという考察に対しての間接的な表現でもあります。この曲で語られる残響と波紋は、仏教の輪廻に対して相対的な考えを表現しました。

音楽面においてこの楽曲の構成は、メロやサビが繰り返される一般的な歌とは異なります。かわりに、旋律と歌詞がエコーすることで、歌詞で表現されるよな思い出や感情を表現しています。また、残響のように、同一の旋律が登場する度に、アレンジやリズムが変化していきます。ボーカルに寄り添う弦も同じように残響のように変化していきます。

この曲は、喪失感や悲壮感と共に、暖かさ、思いやり、親切などの感情が表現されています。私達は大切な人を失う時、様々な感情が生まれます — 幸せだった頃、困難の頃、思わず笑ってしまうような出来事。私達は喪失の悲しみを、長い時間と共に解きほぐすでしょう。それは新たな形となり、エコーしていきます。私達が心から愛した人々は、決して消えることはありません。

During times of war such as the Sengoku period, many people suffer the death of a loved one – a son, a father, a daughter, a wife.  There is so much death that, reading or watching the story, our sense of loss can become vague and diffused; it can lose impact because of the overwhelming numbers.

For each individual, however, that grief is specific, often very detailed and sharp.  The grieving person sees the clothes, the tools or toys, the special chair or cup that the loved one used, and these simple possessions recall the living person, rekindle memories and feelings.

“When It’s Gone” originally was called, “Kindling” because of that phenomenon, that artifacts left behind, rooms and settings we inhabit after a loss can rekindle memories, images, and feelings about the person who has died, sometimes with unexpected power and precision.

In this piece, the lyrics allude first to the things and places the person left behind – a picture or image, clothing, the person’s room.  But the song is also about the feeling that one can have of “echoes;” of the person never completely leaving us.  When we have loved someone deeply, the loss is not a one-time event. Instead, it goes on indefinitely, sometimes changing but never really disappearing. We come across a photo or even something trivial – a bookmark or belt that the person used to use – and that person can be fully recalled to mind.  At other times, there might be just a flash of the person – something she said or a laugh, a trip you took together.  We may recall times when it seemed as if we had forever to spend with the person who is gone.

Mitsuhide was a teacher and a scholar of Buddhism, and the song indirectly alludes to that as well.  The echoes and ripples mentioned in the song have some counterpart with Buddhist notion of infinitely repeating cycles of time and of reincarnation.

Musically, this piece is not exactly in traditional song form, with repeating verses and choruses.  Instead, it echoes itself, both melodically and lyrically, like the memories and feelings it describes and, like an echo, there are few exact repetitions, with the music appearing each time in a slightly different arrangement or rhythm.  The accompanying strings often echo the vocal line as well.

The tone of the music does reflect loss and sadness, but also sweetness, gentleness, kindness.  When someone we treasure has died, our feelings can be everywhere – we remember happy times, difficult times; we can even laugh at a recalled event.  Our emotions may “uncoil” over a long time after the loss; they echo, change shape, and evolve. For someone we have loved fully, it is never really over.
