天災に加え、政治家たちや様々な為政者の利己心も重なり、江戸は苦難の時代を迎えます。この曲はまず災害がもたらす虚しさを映すべく、クリスタルボウルの空虚な音で始まります。続いてソロの弦楽器が加わります。最初にビオラが、そして少し遅れてヴァイオリンとチェロが寄り添い、人の手によるもの、自然によるもの——さまざまな災厄が残した瓦礫への哀歌を静かに奏でます。やがて崩壊の規模が明らかになるにつれ、楽曲は次第に広がりを増し、弦楽が重なり合って織り上げられるように高まり、そこに押し寄せるような悲しみと深い悔恨の思いが溶け合っていきます。

Partly owing to natural disaster, but also because of the selfishness of many actors and politicians, Edo suffers hard times. This piece begins with hollow-sounding bowed crystal bowls, intended to reflect the empty feeling of disaster. Then we hear solo strings – first a viola, joined by a violin and cello a little later, playing a simple lament for the wreckage that these disasters, man-made and natural, have left in their wake. As the scale of the breakage becomes more clear, the piece grows in scale, soaring higher and higher, weaving together the full string section, calling forth an aching feeling, full of powerful sorrow and regret.
