戦国時代、城が攻められることは度々ありましたが、攻城戦には人間離れした胆気が必要とされるものです。（日本も諸外国も）多くの城は、険阻な山岳部に築城されたり、一辺や複数の辺は絶壁を利用することで防御性を高めて、鉄砲隊、弓隊、（諸外国では）火を使用した武器隊が配置されました。その中には初撃が成功しても、繋がった別の砦から援軍が駆けつけられるような城もありました。

「攻防」はそのような猛勇な戦いが描写されています。一般的な4分の4拍子の代わりに4分の3拍子で作曲することで、戦略性と変化する戦いの様子が表現されています。

曲の冒頭は、攻城軍が迅速に戦闘配置に着く様子が描かれています。緊迫感のある雰囲気の中、策略的な様子、そして初撃が始まる前に可能な限り接近するため、周囲の風景に溶け込む様子を表現しています。馬が素早く前進し、火縄銃隊が匍行し、足軽隊は矢を防ぐ木の盾を持ち、門を破るために破城槌が構えられる様子です。

1’10箇所から、本格的な攻撃が始まり、矢が飛び、兵達は倒れていき、攻城軍が（防城軍の）弱点を必死で探さなくてはならない様子が表現されています。戦いは緊迫感が増し、傷を追った馬はもがき、救援がある箇所へ駆けつけ、罠が発動し、城が残るか否かという瞬間です。

Strongholds came under attack constantly during the Sengoku period, but such attacks required almost superhuman courage. Many castles were mounted on steep, volcanic slopes that were difficult to climb; some were also defended by sheer cliffs on one or more sides, and they sported defenders armed with firearms, arrows, and burning pitch. Moreover, even when the attackers scored initial success, some castles were built into connected fortresses, so that assistance quickly could be brought to beleaguered defenders.

“Castle Assault” is both an illustration of and testament to the bravery that it took to fight these battles. The music is somewhat unusual in that it is in 3_4 time, rather than the more typical 4_4, but nevertheless it illustrates the strategy and arc of a fight.

We start off with the attackers moving into position, as quietly as possible. The tone is quite serious, and intended to convey the subterfuge and camouflage commonly adopted to try to get as close as possible before the attack begins. Horses might be moving up, arquebus-armed soldiers are creeping into position, and the assault troops, armed with wooden shields to block arrows, are readying for the attack on the gates, along with battering rams.

At 1’10 the attack begins in earnest; arrows are flying, soldiers are falling. One strong point or another holds, so the attackers must try to find a softer point of attack. The battle builds, wounded horses writhe, resources focus on the one spot, traps are sprung, and the castle stands or falls.
