「離愁」は家族（配偶者や両親）との死別の瞬間に湧き上がる感情を表現した曲です。冒頭のチェロによるソロは、孤独感と悲痛感を表現しています。愛する人の死別の瞬間、共感する人が多くいたとしても、残された親しい人には、唐突感、虚無感、喪失感と共に孤独感が訪れると思います。

1’00箇所から、生前の記憶の回想へと移り、故人の暖かさ、思いやり、優しさを思い出す様子が表現されています。（死別は）悲しみの感情と共に、懐古的で追慕的な記憶が蘇り、愛しい人と過ごした時間や一緒にやっていた何気ないを思い出すこともあると思います。

3’10箇所から、この曲の主旋律が始まります。「美濃の里」を感じるような旋律であり、光秀であれば幼き頃や早期の結婚生活を思い出すかもしれません。身近な人物を失った時、人は生まれ育った故郷、美濃のような美しい場所を思い出すこともあると思います。

5’00箇所から、主旋律がフルオーケストラによって再び演奏されます。（感情的に）動かされる強烈な演奏ですが、主に暖かさと優しさの感情が表現されています。死は免れられない出来事であり、その事実を理解していたとしても、愛する人を失うのは、一緒にした生活した年月が1年間または50年間でも、とても悲しいものです。

I wrote “Farewell” about the feelings of the death of a family member – a spouse or parent. It starts off with solo cello, the loneliness of grief; no matter how many are affected by the death of a loved one, for the individual, it can be a solitary feeling of shock, emptiness, disorientation.
About a minute in, the feelings switch to memory – recalling the sweetness, gentleness, and tenderness of the person lost. It is sad, but the primary memory can be more nostalgia or wistfulness; maybe you recall some time spent with your loved one, or things you used to do together.

At 3’10 the main theme comes in. Reminiscent of the melody of “Mino My Home,” Mitsuhide may be remembering his childhood, or early days of marriage. Sometimes when we have a loss of someone close, it draws us back to feelings of home, of where we grew up, especially if it’s as beautiful a place as Mino.

At five minutes in, the melody repeats in its full orchestration. It is somewhat more powerful and intense, but again its primary emotion is sweetness and tenderness. Loss is inevitable, of course, but even if we know that intellectually, it is hard to lose someone we love, whether we’ve been together for one year, or fifty.
