囚われの糸 / Ensnared
本作の登場人物たちは、遊女から家老に至るまで概ね、それぞれに何かにとらわれています。女性たちは年季奉公で借金地獄、家老は世間でも政界でも叩かれて、終わらない責務と絶えない難問にがんじがらめの八方塞がり…。この曲では、彼らを縛る果てなき拘束の鎖の輪を弦楽器のオスティナートが浮き彫りにします。そして他の弦楽器たちはその上で絶え間なく降り注ぐように音を紡ぎ、彼らの運命を嘆いています。結局は、彼らは冷酷で逃げ場のない非情な運命の虜となり、その圧力は徐々に高まり、ついには地獄のような歌声とともに極限へと達するのです。
Many of the figures in the story, from the courtesans to government officials, are trapped in their situations. Whether it’s the indentured indebtedness of the women or the social and political strictures of the government advisors, they often feel caught in an ever-flowing, inescapable stream of obligations and barriers. The string ostinato of this piece is intended to represent the never-ending cycle in which the characters are trapped, with the other strings lamenting their fate, weaving around each other in an incessant pattern. In the end, they are in the grip of an unfeeling, inescapable and brutal destiny, with the pressure gradually intensifying to a climax accompanied by hellish chanting.
