18世紀の日本に、社会を支えるセーフティ・ネットなどというものは存在しません。丁稚だったら、ひとたび仕事を失えば餓死すらありえた時代。そんな時代に、自分の人生を切り拓くためそれまでの仕事を捨てた重三郎は、極めて勇敢な男だったと言えます。目標を達成できるまで幾度も賭けに挑み続けた「ギャンブラー」としての側面も、彼の一部です。

この楽曲では、メインテーマの旋律を引用しながら転調を繰り返し、８分の７拍子や８分の５拍子を使い、どこか不安を感じさせるリズムを取り入れました。さらに、箏や三味線の軽妙な音色を加えて仕上げました。旋律は時に、まるで崖っぷちでふらついているような危うさを漂わせます。それは、まさに重三郎が人生の中で幾度も味わった感覚そのものなのかもしれません。

There was no social safety net in the 18th century. As Jyuzaburo set out on his quest to create a better life for himself, he risked losing his existing job at a time where jobless apprentices could starve. But, he did it anyway. He made a brave wager and then, as viewers will discover, continued to take risks. One way to assess his life is that he was a gambler who had to risk everything, over and over, to achieve what he did.

The music for this piece quotes the theme from the main title, then jumps from key to key, using 7/8 and 5/8 meters to keep things a little unsettled, and uses the koto and shamisen to lend an informal tone. Sometimes the melody feels as though it’s teetering on the edge of falling, just as Jyuzaburo often was himself.
