この曲で表現されているのは、光秀が道を共にした信長が、日本を統じることを目指しつつも如何なる手段も選ばない者であったことに対しての痛恨の嘆きです。信長は敵側であれば容赦無く女子供をも殺める人物であり、それは光秀が望む理想とは反するものです。

冒頭から2’33″は、信長と共に歩んでしまった事に対して、朽ちて空虚となってしまった光秀の心情が表現されています。信長の武力による暴挙、神のような存在を目指す行動が、光秀の熱き想いが灰と化してしまった様子です。

2’41からは、光秀が深く悔悟を噛み締める様子が表現されております。音楽的には「後悔と亡失」のコードが鳴り、これは「本能寺 II」の後半にて信長の視点を表現した箇所で再び登場します。

暴君と共に歩んだ事の苦悩の末、灯った光秀の怒りは6’03から曲の最後まで憤激は増幅し続け、曲の最後に、信長を討つための力をかき集める様子が死の行進曲として表現されています。

The outset of this piece reflects Mitsuhide’s deadening realisation that he has allied himself to a man who does indeed wish to unite all Japan, but is willing to use any means necessary to do so.  Nobunaga by this time had shown his willingness to kill even women and children if they were affiliated with his enemies, the opposite of what Mitsuhide had wished for.

From the beginning until about 2’33 this piece expresses Mitsuhide’s dead, hollow feeling at having united with Nobunaga; the violence of Nobunaga’s warfare and increasing sense of god-like importance have turned Mitsuhide’s enthusiasm to ashes.

Beginning about 2’41, Mitsuhide feels terrible remorse, and here we hear the “regret and loss” chords that will echo later also in Nobunaga’s thoughts.

As he contemplates his situation, allied to what he now believes is a madman, Mitsuhide’s anger is kindled, growing from 6’03 to the end into a towering fury, followed by a slow death march as he gathers his energies to attack Nobunaga.
