美濃は光秀の故郷であり、静かな田園地域で海に面しておらず、尾張のような近隣国と比べるとあまり豊かではない場所でした。英題「Mino, My Home」は音響統括の畑奈穂子氏が名付けてくれました。曲の構想を得るため、まずは私はネットで現在の美濃をバーチャルで旅しました。そして伝統的な衣服、陶磁器（美濃焼）、美術品や伝統的な日本家屋を観賞しました。

美濃を探検して最も印象的だったのは、とても美しい山々と森景色、そして有名な滝と愛しい木々でした。私が育ったアメリカのバージニア州は、まるで美濃のような場所です。（バージニア州にも）美しい山々、多くの森、隠れた湖、木々の中に秘密の場所があります。

「美濃の里」を作曲するにあたり、（旋律が）私に自然と舞い降りたのは想像して頂けるかと思います。現在、私はロサンゼルスで生活しており、この大都市は故郷とは全く異なり、緑や自然な土地に思いを馳せる気持ちは、私の心に自然と芽生えました。故郷を、そして幼少期に体験した変哲のない場所を思い出させてくれるような旋律を、僅かなホームシックな感情と共に書き留めました。大都市へ移り住んだ人は、共感して頂けるかと思います。

（この曲は）まるで子守唄のように弦が柔らかく入り、ソロのフルートによる旋律で始まります。まるで、とても心地のよい森の中で一人で過ごしている時に、木々から届く心地よい風と緑に囲まれている情景を想像して頂けるかと思います。その後、弦がフルートを継いで、再び主旋律を、今度は少し旋律と響きを変えながら奏でます。ブリッジ箇所は、静思と少しの戸惑いの表現の後、合唱のようなアレンジのルオーケストラの演奏箇所へと続きます。

3’00箇所からは、力強い高揚感と共に、フルオーケストラと合唱による主旋律が、6本のフレンチホルンと重ねたフリューゲルホルンによる対旋律と共に演奏されます。平和で穏やかな地を思い出して故郷を恋しく思う時、時に大きな感情が人の心に呼び起こされることが表現されています。

Mino is Mitsuhide’s home, a rural, quiet place that has no access to the sea, so it is also relatively poorer than some of its neighbours such as Owari. Nahoko Hata, the NHK sound supervisor, gave me the title for this piece. For inspiration, I took a virtual tour of Mino to see what it looks like today. I also looked at traditional clothing from there, pottery, art work, and the traditional houses as well.

What most struck me in exploring Mino were the beautiful mountains and the forests, the famous waterfall and the lovely trees. I grew up in the USA in Virginia, a place that looks a little like Mino. We also have lovely mountains, lots of forests, hidden ponds, and many wooded, private places.

So you can imagine that the music for “Mino My Home” came to me very naturally. Today, I live in Los Angeles, a large city that looks nothing like home, so feelings of longing for a greener, more natural place sprang easily to mind. I wrote a melody to evoke the feeling of home, of a simple place from childhood, and with a touch of homesickness as well. People who have moved to a large city from the country can, I’m sure, picture the feeling.

The strings enter gently, like a lullaby, and the flute plays the melody as a solo first. You can maybe imagine being alone in a pleasant forest, a light breeze in the trees, surrounded by green. Then the strings take over from the flute, restating the theme with a little variation and different harmonization. A bridge intervenes, thoughtful and a little hesitant, followed by the full orchestra arranged almost like a choir.

Finally, there is a powerful surge of feeling, at 3’00, when the full orchestra and choir state the main theme in a new key, with a countermelody played by six French Horns, doubled with Flugel horns for extra scale. Even when thinking of a calm, gentle place, feelings about a missed home can exert a powerful pull.
