この楽曲にはさまざまな情景を織り込みました。ゆったりとしたテンポが、静かに物思いにふけるような、深く心を巡らせるような雰囲気を生み出し、ときには物悲しさも漂わせます。作曲中、思い描いていたのは水にたゆたう光でした。潮の満ち引きを生み出し、絶え間なく海を動かす月。その姿は、穏やかでありながら常に揺らいでいます。東京の水辺や空想上の湖の水面に映る、揺らめく月光の輝きが心に浮かんできました。

江戸という時代は、絶えず変化が起きていた時代でした。江戸時代に思いを馳せている時、ふとシェイクスピアの有名な「移り気な月。月は夜毎、その丸い姿を変えてしまう（“the inconstant moon, that monthly changes in her circled orb.”）」という言葉がよぎりました。「べらぼう」の登場人物たちも、目まぐるしい変化に翻弄されています。しかし我らが主人公・蔦重は、吉原や自身の人生でさえも自ら変化させ、切り拓こうとする人物。戦国の争乱が遠い過去となった江戸の時代は、野心を抱く者や自由を求める者にとっては刺激的な時代でした。変わり続ける「浮世」のきらびやかさに、多くの人々が魅了されていたことでしょう。

This track hints at a range of ideas. At its slow tempo, it is thoughtful, contemplative; possibly melancholy. I was thinking of flowing light and water as I wrote this – the moon that creates our tides and keeps the seas always moving, always restless. I was also picturing the flickering of moonlight reflected on moving water, maybe on the waters around Tokyo or an imagined lake.

Edo was a restless time, when things were constantly subject to change, and I was thinking, while composing, of Shakespeare’s memorable description of the moon, “the inconstant moon, that monthly changes in her circled orb.” Many of the characters in Berabou are contending with constant change, and our protagonist is actively seeking to drive that change in Yoshiwara and his personal life. Edo was an exciting time to be alive for the ambitious and free; with the constant fighting of the Sengoku period far behind them, many people pursued their dreams. The glitter of the ever-changing “Floating World” was a powerful lure.
