18世紀という時代、政治は、そして日常生活さえ過酷でした。この曲は、当時の苛烈な政変を描き出しています。まるで鐘が鳴り響くような不気味なチェロの音色が、物事が醜く変わっていく気配を示します。続いて弦楽器が、はじめはソロで、やがて次第に厚みを増しながら同じフレーズを繰り返します。そこへホーミーの独唱が加わり、嘆きに満ちた合唱と、訴えるように高まり続ける弦が重なり合っていきます。
Politics and even everyday life could be merciless in the 18th century. This piece outlines the harshness that often accompanied political change in those days. Over a menacing bed, a group of cellos indicates – like the tolling of a bell – that things are going to go someplace ugly. They are succeeded by a repeated figure in the strings – solo at first, and gradually building. Then the solo Hoomai vocal enters, along with lamenting choral gestures and an ever-mounting string plea.
