強い信念は大きな成果を生み出すこともありますが、一方で行きすぎれば柔軟さを失い、周囲に深い傷を残すこともあります。この曲は、松平定信の治世に見られた対立する二つの側面——暗黒面と芸術界——を描いています。善政を志しながらも、当時の幕府は次第に硬直した保守主義へと傾き、それまで江戸の人々が享受してきた改革をいくつも後退させました。増大する疑念、弾圧される言論、伝統的慣習への回帰、そして厳しい検閲——そうした動きが、この物語の登場人物に影響を与え、そして主人公・重三郎にも影を落とします。曲はまず、オーボエの澄んだ高音で始まります。その音が静かに響いたのち、やがて重厚な低音のオーボエが応じ、物語が次第に暗くなっていくように、喉の奥で鳴るような深く暗い音色へと移り変わっていきます。この曲では、幸運にも名手クリス・ブレスさんが木管独奏を務めてくれました。

Sometimes, a powerful belief in oneself leads to great achievements, but it also can lead to rigidity and wreak serious damage. This piece illustrates two sides of the political era under Matsudaira Sadanobu – the dark and the artistic. Although wishing to do good, the government at the time ordained rigid, backward-looking orthodoxy, reversing some reforms that Edo residents had previously enjoyed. Greater suspicion, prosecution of dissent, an effort to revert to former times and their customs, and serious censorship all affected characters in the story, including our protagonist, Jyuzaburo. This cue features the oboe initially, clear and beautiful, in its upper register, but then is echoed by the rare bass oboe, with its throaty, dark sound, as the material and the story move to a sombre tone. We were lucky to have the extraordinary woodwind soloist, Chris Bleth, playing on this track.
