しゃれくらべ / Satire
重三郎の出世、そして今日も愛される浮世絵の隆盛。もちろんそれは素晴らしい偉業ですが、一方で重三郎の出版物がどんなものだったかというと、まさに彼の人生そのもののように真面目一辺倒だったわけではありません。むしろ真逆で、事実、駄洒落の本や、お世辞にも高尚とは言えないような物語など、彼の作る本は「ストリート感」に溢れています。この曲では、ノリがよくて茶目っ気と愛嬌たっぷりの重三郎の人物像と、町の人々との楽しくおおらかな暮らしを描いています。サクソフォンとピアノによる軽快な掛け合い——いわゆる “trading licks”——は、人々が競って狂歌を詠み合っているように響きます。狂歌合せでは、読み手たちがお互いに、誰よりもうまい“粋な歌”で打ち負かしてやろうと張り合いました。まるでジャズのセッションと同じですね。
We celebrate Jyuzaburo for his promotion and the spread of the marvelous Ukiyo-e art we admire today. Nevertheless, not everything he published, nor every part of his life was serious. In fact, just the opposite. From joke books to less-than-lofty stories and imagery, his output included plenty of “street.” This piece expresses the improvisatory, humourous, and goofy side of Jyuzaburo and life among the townspeople of that time. The playful solos from saxophones and piano – trading licks, as it is known – also illustrates the poetry competitions, Kyōka, which was played in that era. In Kyōka, successive poets tried to “top” each others’ clever poems, having to improvise on the spot, just as jazz players do.
