日本橋へと拠点を移す中で、重三郎はひとりの女性と「同盟」を結ぶことになります。ある事情で自らの本屋を手放すほか道がないという状況に追い込まれていた寡婦、貞です。礼儀正しく、気品を備え、身分にも敏感な彼女にとって、素性もわからず家柄もない「吉原者」の重三郎はどうにも信用ならない存在でした。しかし、そんな彼との結婚に内心強い抵抗を覚えつつも、あくまでビジネス上のパートナーとして受け入れることにしたのです。最初のうち二人の関係は形式的で冷ややかなものでした。重三郎の話し方や所作のひとつひとつに貞は反発を覚えますが、それでも貞は、日本橋の店主らしい「振る舞い」を重三郎に少しずつ教えようとします。表面的には違いばかりが目につく二人でしたが、やがて彼らはお互いが「出版」という営みが持つ力と意義を心から信じていることに気づきます。少しずつ、しかし確かに、互いの奥底にある真実を見出していき、ビジネスパートナーという枠を超え心と心が結ばれていくのです。『Soulmates』と名付けたこの曲は、たった三音のハープの音からためらいがちに始まります。幾度か失敗を重ねて、やがて一つの流れが生まれ、そしてふくらみゆくその流れにバイオリンがシンプルな下降旋律でそっと寄り添います。旋律は少しずつ自らの命を宿し、新たな枝を伸ばしながら互いに絡み合っていきます。 性格も境遇もまったく違う二人だからこそ、ときにぶつかり合い不協和音も生まれますが、それでも、想いと音楽は静かに、そして美しく、花ひらいていくのです。

As part of his move to Nihonbashi, Jyuzaburo forms an alliance with Tei, a widow who has been forced by circumstances to sell her publishing house. She is an educated, formal beauty, sensitive to her social position, suspicious of a man whom she knows of only as an uneducated, unpedigreed chancer from Yoshiwara. With great reluctance, she enters into a business partnership with Jyuzaburo by way of marriage. At first, it is a formal, frosty, business-only relationship. His way of speaking, his table manners and other habits repel her, but she undertakes to teach him how to behave more correctly. Despite these jarring, if superficial differences, however, each of them discovers in the other a shared belief in the power and importance of printing and of disseminating knowledge. Gradually, but powerfully, they discern deeper truths about each other, realizing finally that they are not only united in a business partnership, but in love. The music for “Soulmates” starts hesitantly, and simply – three notes on the harp. But then, after a few false starts, a flow begins, which grows and elaborates, joined by violins in a descending, simple line, a line that then takes on a life of its own, with new tendrils shooting out from it and wrapping around each other. Understandably, with two such different people, there are moments of dissonance and clashes, but the feeling and the music blossoms.
