幕府の検閲や弾圧が強まる気配を感じながらも、重三郎の版元は、ますます挑発的に伝統や権力を皮肉る風刺作品を次々と世に送り出していきます。実際の人物を歴史上の人物になぞらえたり、架空の物語に仕立てたりと、一見それとわからぬようにしてはいるものの読者にはすぐにそれが誰のことかわかってしまう——。そうして彼の本は、やがて物議を醸すことになりました。この曲は、そんな重三郎と作家たちの茶目っ気たっぷりで反骨心あふれる一面を描いています。権威を軽く突っついて、皮肉と笑いでからかって——そんな“したたかなユーモア”が音楽にも息づいています。『Glorious Edo』の主旋律をサックスや木管楽器が狡猾さを感じさせるように響かせ、まるで酒場で悪戯を企むトリックスターを思わせるような軽やかな仕上がりになっています。

Conscious of looming government censorship and repression, the publishing house of Jyuzaburo begins to generate ever-more pointed parodies of tradition and of the authorities. Although somewhat disguised (the characters are displaced in time or cast as a made-up story), readers quickly discern the real targets of these satires, which generates trouble. This piece is intended to show the saucy side of Jyuzaburo and his writers, tweaking the authorities in an irreverent, sarcastic way. The main theme from Glorious Edo appears in a sly form on saxophones and other winds, and the whole vibe is that of a beer hall trickster.
