いつの時代でも、強欲とは、賢人や聖職者たちに戒められるものです。ローマ・カトリック教会では、それは「七つの大罪」の一つとされていますし、仏教でも、金銭や世俗的な物品、名声といった刹那的なものを追い求める者は、愚かで、悟りなど得られるものではなく、この浮世では必ず不幸の道へと至ると見なされています。それでも、人はそんな警告に耳を傾けることはないように思えます。社会が築かれ始めた太古の時代から、「もっと欲しい」という思いは人の営みの大きな原動力となってきました。この江戸の時代においても、「欲は善なり」といった考えがなんなく受け入れられていたとしても、不思議ではありません。

この曲は、オーケストラはまるで沸き立っているかのように絶え間なく動き続けます。うねる弦の音、奇妙な木管楽器の旋律や和音、潜むようなミュートトランペットの不思議な響き、そして移り変わる音色の数々。時にはひそやかに、時には陽気に、そして時に禍々しく、はたまた華々しく音楽が展開します。欲望はあらゆる行動の動機となりますが、利己的で執着的なものもあれば、良心的で称賛に値するものもあります。たとえそれが利己主義に端を発していても、素晴らしい宝物を生み出すことがあります。たとえばそれは、偉大な建築や科学的発見などでしょうし、「べらぼう」の場合ですと、やはり世界中で大ブレイクした浮世絵が、その一例と言えるでしょう。

It seems that, in every age, sages and religious figures have condemned greed. In the Roman Catholic Church, Greed is one of the Seven Deadly Sins. In Buddhism, pursuing money, worldly goods, fame, and other ephemera is regarded as unenlightened, foolish, and dooms the pursuers to inevitable unhappiness in our ever-changing, floating world. Nevertheless, humans never seem to listen; from the time of the earliest eras when people gathered together in societies, wanting “more” has been a major engine of activity – to some in this time in Edo, the expression “greed is good” would have seemed quite acceptable.

This piece features constant activity, as if the orchestra is boiling away. We hear weaving strings; odd woodwind melodies and harmonic movements; quirky, lurking muted trumpets; and many shifts of tone. Sometimes it’s sneaky, sometimes cheerful, sometimes sinister, and of course, sometimes celebratory. Greed motivates all kinds of activity, some selfish and grasping; some benign and commendable. Sometimes, even though it might originate in selfishness, greed produces amazing treasures – great buildings, scientific discoveries, and, of course, in the case of Berabou, ukiyo-e’s world-wide explosion.
