江戸時代は幸いにも平和な時代でしたが、それでも金銭や名誉、権力をめぐる激しい闘争がありました。どんな業界でも、頭角を現せばたちまち標的にされることがあったのです。

野心的に突き進む重三郎の前にも幾度となく手強いライバルが現れ、世間知らずなところにつけ込まれそうになりますし、幕府の上層部にいた武士でさえ、失脚や命の危険と隣り合わせでした。

この曲は、冒頭から不穏な空気が漂っています。コントラバスとチェロがオクターブ違いで同じメロディを奏でて重厚な響きを醸し出しているのに加え、LEOさんの箏の即興演奏が緊迫感をさらに引き立て、そして２分に差し掛かる直前、曲は８分の７拍子のしつこく絡みつくようなリズムへと切り替わります。それはまるで蛇のように蠢きながらどこかに潜む危険を暗示して、次第に不気味さを増していきます。

Although the Edo Period, mercifully, was a time of peace, nevertheless, there was ferocious competition for money, for prestige, and for governmental power. To be raised up in any of these spheres could make one into a target.

As Jyuzaburo explores his ambitions, he frequently runs up against aggressive competitors seeking to take advantage of his lack of sophistication, and those in senior government positions also risked being deposed or even killed.

This piece announces an ominous world from the beginning, with basses and cellos in octaves, and LEO’s koto improvisations adding to the sense of menace. Just before the two-minute mark, this piece pivots to a more insistent 7/8 rhythm that, like a snake, curls along and suggests a sense of lurking threat, gradually building.
