信長が登場するドラマ、映画、ゲーム、記録、伝説はとても多いですが、真の人物像を理解するのは難しいです。無慈悲な一面と臨機の才を持つ名将だったのは疑いがないと思われます。（信長が持っていた）高い自尊心、捕虜への残虐行為、（天皇を超越するような）神格的な存在を目指したという一説から推測すると、徳の高い人格者であったかは疑問です。予期せぬ行動性、独特の魅力を持ち、皆から警戒されていた人物であったのは明らかだと思われます。

「麒麟がくる」において、信長はエニグマ（謎深き人物）として描かれています。多くの人々に理解されておらず、急な心変わりがあり、突発的に感情的になる傾向があり — 涙したり奮激したり — 一方で感情が一瞬で落ち着くこともあり、（後に「葉隠」などで語られる）武士道に登場する一般的な武将像とは奇なる人物です。

（この曲において）信長の激昂的な人間性、奇態な戦略性、大胆不敵な様子の表現として、（蛇のように）滑り動く主旋律と様々な国の個性的な楽器を使用しました。（アレンジ面では）半音で滑りのある動きの旋律に、琴、タブラやディルバなどのインド楽器、ジャズで使用されるウッドベース、シェイカーやフィンガーシンバルを加えています。様々な金属やシンバルを弦で擦った響きは、不安定さを強め、（信長が）まるで異世界からやってきた謎めいた人物であることを表現しています。

（日本や諸外国の歴史に登場する）信長のような人物は、異なる場所から（もしかしたら別の惑星から）到来したような存在感があります。（その人物像の表現として）一般的な楽器と珍しい楽器を、あえて統一感を感じさせないように使用しました。一方で、武将として信長は異例の覇業も多々成し遂げています。

（この曲の序盤の）滑り動く旋律は、若き信長が表現されています。彼の兄弟や両親との複雑な関係性、もしくは彼の先天的に奇なる人物像の表現でしょうか。

4’20箇所からは、武将としての信長が表現されています。太鼓の鼓動が低域の金管と弦と共に突如にクレッシェンドし、壮大な弦により半音構成の信長のテーマと、強大な金管による対旋律が登場し、曲の最後で頂天を作り上げます。信長は他の誰も異なる人物であるため、（音楽的に）短調を用いることで、彼の奇異性、武将としての力と才覚、未知性が表現されています。

There are so many stories, video games, histories, and legends about Nobunaga that perhaps it’s impossible to really understand what kind of a man he was. It is undoubtedly the case that he was a ruthless, resourceful, and brilliant commander. Nevertheless, stories about his pride, his cruel treatment of prisoners, and, later, his wish to be worshipped as divine or semi-divine raise questions about what his personality might have been like. Definitely, an unpredictable, fascinating, person, and undoubtedly, at times, alarming too.

In Kirin Ga Kuru, Nobunaga is something of an enigma. He is misunderstood by many, he changes his mind rapidly, he is prone to emotional outbursts – tears and bursts of uncontrolled anger – that then are sometimes quickly finished – he is quite unusual as a military figure, as a follower of bushido.

To capture Nobunaga’s swift mood changes, his tactical slipperiness in battle, and his reportedly wild behaviour, I wrote a melody for him that is also a bit slippery and accompanied by an eclectic jumble of instruments. It features half-step “slides” in the strings, accompanied by koto, tabla drums and Dilruba from India, a twine acoustic bass from backroom jazz, and adds shakers and finger cymbals for percussion. Bowed metallic bowls and cymbals contribute a backdrop of unsettling sounds, whose origins are a bit unclear and somewhat other-worldly.

The overarching idea is that people like Nobunaga seem to come from another place than the rest of us – almost another planet. I wanted to surround him with instruments from near and far-away places that are incongruous, odd and unexpected in an ensemble. Certainly, as a general and a leader, Nobunaga performed unexpected feats over and over.

The music slips around as we are being introduced to Nobunaga as a young man. Maybe the music is illustrating his complicated relationship with his brothers and parents? Maybe it’s just the way he was wired?

Then, at 4’20, the military Nobunaga emerges. We hear a marching drum beat, with low brass and strings, with an abrupt (unexpected) crescendo into a huge statement of Nobunaga’s half-step-laden theme in the strings, accompanied by an enormous brass countermelody, building to a climax at the end. Nobunaga was a man like no other, so I wanted the music to reflect the musical mirror of his idiosyncrasies, his power and incredible effectiveness in war, and his unpredictability.
